KLEIN BONAIRE

Klein Bonaire (Dutch for “Little Bonaire”) is an uninhabited small island which lies only half a mile from Bonaire. Their white sandy beaches are worth a visit. It can be reached by renting a boat, taking a tour or taking the water taxi (Kantika di Amor) leaving from the Bonaire Nautico Marina,in the center of Kralendijk, at scheduled times.

 WASHINGTON-SLAGBAAI NATIONAL PARK
The park is the first nature sanctuary of the Netherland Antilles, it was established in 1969.
The park has 34 km (21 miles) of dirt roads. Two trails can be chosen.

The long one beginning along the west coast, passes by the northest point of the island and the diving site on the east coast (the most points of interest are on that route).
The short one crosses the park from the entrance to the east coast, through the “cactus forest”, directly to some diving sites.
You can visit it by car or by mountain bike, if you are in good shape. In the park you can also go hiking (three different trails), kayaking and diving.

LAC BAY

Located on the southeastern coast of Bonaire, this lagoon is the biggest of the Caribbean. There are two peninsulas Sorobon and Cai.

Sorobon is the windsurf pradise of Bonaire. Knee deep clear water is not only for surfers: try kayaking or simply walking in the water until the barrier reef.

In Cai, on the opposte side, you can find a small beach to relax and the mangroves. The fishermen who live there also sell refreshments. On weekends local music groups play live music and freshly caught fried fish is sold.

THE ROAD TO GOTO LAKE and RINCON

Leaving Kralendijk, heading to north, you pass through Hato and Sabadeco. The shore keeps becoming higher and a coastal road begins: a sequence of scenic points and pedestrian path, you can’t miss! After Karpata, the road becomes one-way. At the end the road bends to the right along the border of the Washington-Slagbaai Nat’l Park and the Goto Lake, where flamingos can be observed. The road gets to Rincon, the oldest village on Bonaire. Stop at Rose Inn for a refreshing cold drink or to eat traditional bonarian meals.  From Rincon to Kralendijk, the road offers again points of interest like Boka Onima or the Indian inscriptions.

THE ROAD TO THE SOUTH

Leaving Kralendijk, heading to south, you pass in front of the airport and through Belnem.

Here the shore is low, on the right you have the sea, on the left the pink salt pans. Then you get to the salt pier, where salt mountains are prepared top be loaded onto freighters. Keep going on the same way, the panorama is breathtaking: endless flats on the left, it is the Flamingos Sanctuary, and blue water on the right. During your trip you meet the old slave huts and the lighthouse on the extreme south. The road runs along the east coast now, the ocean is rough! At the end you get to Sorobon: you can stop for a swim, a drink or something to eat.

SEA TURTLE

On Bonaire is really easy to see turtles. All beaches of Bonaire are used periodically from sea turtle for nesting activity.

They prefer the No Name beach of  Klein Bonaire, but you can enjoy a swim with them almost everywhere in the island.

Read what they do at the Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire.

 donkey

DONKEY

These animals were originally brought to the island to work in the great salt pans. Then they were set free and replaced with machines.

They live free on the island and you can watch them everywhere or next to the runway of the airport at the Donkey Sanctuary, the ecological park.

SERU LARGU

It is one of the highest point on the island. From there you can have a panoramic view of the south of the island and Klein Bonaire. From the same place you can overlook on both the west and the east coast. Also sunset and stargazing should be tried from there.
